Clay Shrinkage Test Tile Cutter + Stamp – 5 cm or 10 cm Scale
Clay Shrinkage Test Tile Cutter + Stamp – 5 cm or 10 cm Scale

The listed dimensions are the size of the tool, i.e. the wet clay. Clay shrinks during drying and firing, usually around 5–15%, and the final size of your piece always depends on your own clay and firing temperature. For example, with a 10 cm size and 12% shrinkage, the finished piece would be about 8.8 cm. Please check your clay's shrinkage before ordering and choose the size accordingly.

Find out exactly how much your clay shrinks. This cutter cuts a test tile from a 5 mm slab and stamps a measuring scale into it in the same press, so every tile you make is a ready-made shrinkage test.
Roll your slab to an even 5 mm and press the cutter straight down until the back plate meets the clay. The cutting wall is exactly 5 mm tall, so it cuts cleanly through the slab just as the scale is pressed about 1.5 mm deep. Small air holes in the back plate help the tile release. A band of squares above the scale shows how a glaze behaves over texture.
Dry and fire the tile, then lay a ruler against the stamped scale. Shrinkage % = (scale length − measured length) ÷ scale length × 100. For example, if the 10 cm scale measures 8.8 cm after firing, your clay shrank 12 %. Write the clay name and firing temperature on the back of the tile to keep a record.
Two sizes: the 10 cm version (tile approx. 12.2 × 4.2 cm) gives the most accurate reading, and the 5 cm version (tile approx. 7.2 × 4.2 cm) saves clay and kiln space when you test many clays or glazes at once. Both are 3D-printed from PLA at Icewood Atelier's workshop in Finland.
