Collection: Negative Molds
Our negative molds (also called slump molds) have a recessed shape: you lay a rolled clay slab into the mold and it takes on the form of a platter, tray or dish with raised edges.
More control over the shape. With the clay sitting in the hollow, it’s easy to press it exactly into shape and position it just the way you want. While it’s in the mold you can decorate the inside surface – unless you’ve already textured the slab with a pattern roller – or add details such as handles.
Works with moist clay. Negative molds work well even with soft, quite moist clay, because the mold holds the shape for you. And as the clay shrinks away from the walls while it dries, it can stay in the mold through the whole drying process without cracking.
A handy bonus: flipped upside down, a negative mold can also be used as a drape mold. Just remember to use a slightly firmer slab and to lift the clay off by the leather-hard stage when you use it that way. For molds made specifically for draping, see our Drape Molds.
Many molds have matching cutters that trim the slab to the right size before shaping. All molds are 3D-printed from PLA in our workshop in Finland and are not intended for food use.
